Archbishop of Pelosi calls him again for advocating that taxpayers fund abortions

Many Catholic bishops in America seem too cowardly to defend the doctrine of the faith when abortion is at the center of the debate, as evidenced by a vote in mid-June.

At the time, amid a debate over whether powerful Catholic Democratic politicians, like President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, should be barred from receiving Holy Communion after supporting the abortion, 25% of bishops rejected the idea.

However, Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone is not one of them.

Last week, for the second time in a month, Cordileone, who oversees the Archdiocese of San Francisco, called Pelosi for supporting federal funding for abortion.

In late July, the website reported that Pelosi had blocked pressure from House Republicans 55 times for a vote on bills related to taxpayer-funded abortions in the past month.

The problem is the Hyde Amendment, a provision that first banned public funding for the procedure in 1976. It has been renewed every year since then, often enjoying broad bipartisan support.

But this year, as the number of pro-life Democrats fell to zero, Pelosi’s caucus dropped the Hyde Amendment, paving the way for forcing pro-life taxpayers to fund abortion.

GOP representatives Gus Bilirakis of Tarpon Springs, Scott Franklin of Lakeland and Kat Cammack of Gainesville are among those who have pleaded for a vote to continue the Hyde Amendment.

According to, the Hyde Amendment has saved an estimated 2.4 million lives.

Archbishop Cordileone tweeted the story to, which featured a prominent photo of Pelosi, and said: “The Hyde Amendment saved 2.4 million innocent babies. Catholics defend human life and fundamental human rights.

A week before this article, Pelosi oddly told reporters that she supported ending the Hyde Amendment because, as a “devout Catholic,” she believed it was essential to help poor women get abortions. .

Cordileone, in a statement posted on the Archdiocese’s website, replied: “Let me repeat: no one can claim to be a devout Catholic and tolerate the murder of innocent human lives, let alone the government paying. for that. “

“The right to life is a basic human right – the most basic – and Catholics do not oppose basic human rights. Using the abortion smokescreen as a health and equity issue for poor women is the epitome of hypocrisy: what about the health of the slain baby?

“They are people of faith who run pro-life crisis pregnancy clinics; they are the only ones to offer poor women vital alternatives to the death of their baby in their womb, ”added the Archbishop.

“I cannot be more proud of my fellow Catholics who play such an important role in the delivery of this vital service. I tell them: you are worthy to call yourselves “fervent Catholics”!
