Marian devotees celebrate on Monday, August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the main and oldest feast of the Blessed Mother.
Memorial Masses will be celebrated in parishes placed under his patronage in different parts of the country.
At the parish of Our Lady of the Assumption of Guinobatan, Albay, masses will be offered at 5 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m. (solemn concelebration), 4 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. The prayer of the holy rosary, the novena and the celebration of Holy Mass in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption took place from August 6 to 13. The pilgrim image of Our Lady was also carried in all the barangays and site chapels of Guinobatan.
Festive Masses will also be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish on Asuncion Street, Malate, Manila as well as Davao City, Davao del Sur; Dauis, Bohol; Tanauan, Leyte; and in San Pedro, Laguna.
Considered a public holiday in some countries, Roman Catholics regard the feast of the Assumption as the “heavenly birthday” of the Blessed Mother in commemoration of the belief in her physical assumption into heaven.
The belief in the bodily abduction of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to heaven at the end of her earthly life is also observed by the Eastern Orthodox Churches and Eastern Orthodoxy, among others,
The ascension of Mary into heaven was defined as a dogma of faith by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The Second Vatican Council declared that “the Immaculate Virgin, preserved from all stain of original sin, was raised body and soul in the celestial glory, when her earthly life was ended, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of all things.
