Isabel Heins Laurent
December 14, 2021
Sanford, NC – Isabel Heins Lawrence, a woman of faith, love and joy, joined her Heavenly Father on December 14, 2021 at the age of 92. Thanks to her sons, Caregivers and UNC Hospice, she was able to stay at home until her death.
Born in Sanford, North Carolina, and a longtime resident, Isabel was the only daughter of Edward Chandler “Tuts” Heins and Ethel Spaugh Heins. Ruled by her amazing parents, “Issie” grew up with a strong faith in God and a love for the Church. She first attended First Presbyterian Church with her parents and then, as a newlywed, joined First Baptist Church. Later in her life, Isabel became a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and then, even later in her life, joined the “flock” of St. Thomas Anglican Church. One of Issies’ contributions, as an Anglican, has been to be a “reader” in services. She was both energized and humbled by this honor.
Isabel has participated in a number of diverse and remarkable activities in her adult life. Here is a sample of them: Former President of the Sanford Jr. Women’s Club, Founding Member and Past President of the Pickwick Papers Literary Club,
A member of the First Baptist Church from 1947 to 2012, she taught Sunday School for over 50 years and served on numerous committees, was a founding member of St. Francis Anglican Church, Sanford, NC, former administrator NC Museum of History, former administrator NC Baptist Children’s Home, member of Yolk for 20 years (Sanford Advancement Center) and former president of the local group, former administrator of the library of Lee County, involved in the creation of the new library; served on the Endor Furnace Restoration Committee, one of the founders of the Temple Theater, on the Board of Directors; a former member of the Old Footlight Players, a 40-year-old member of the Brush ad Palette Club, the Best in Show award; a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Pastor Steven at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, member of the Dogwood Garden Club,
Issie helped the Lee County Boys and Girls Club flourish,
And one of the founders / directors of TLC Home.
As adults, Isabel and Bill got personally involved in helping to make Sanford and Lee County a better place to live and prosper. Surprisingly, this generous spirit seemed to be available to anyone in need they encountered.
The energy and kindness of “Issie” was the hallmark of a woman who loved God, family and life. This zest was shared by her loving husband of 64 years, William (Bill) Lawrence. Bill predeceased her death in 2010 at the age of 82.
Bill and Issie were one hell of a team, both at work and at play. Along with several longtime friends, they have made adventure an integral part of their lives. Traveling a lot, they enjoyed bringing home keepsakes, keepsakes for others, and comedic stories about the misadventures they had encountered. For example, Issie once prepared gourmet meals “on board” a writhing sailboat using only meager supplies.
Isabel and Bill loved their four “Boys” and their families. She expressed this feeling when she said, “My greatest JOY is my family.” The four “boys” and families are: William Gerrard Lawrence and his wife Margaretta Brinn Lawrence, their daughter Margaretta (Meg) Terry and her husband Geordan Terry, and their daughter Maggie; Edward Thaddeus Lawrence and wife Juli Anne Callis Lawrence, son Thaddeus and wife Sarah, grandsons Ethan and Weston, daughter Isabelle; Robert Pender Lawrence and his wife Jan McPherson Lawrence, his son Nicholas (deceased), his daughter Ashley, his grandchildren Francesca, Easton and Aubrey; Richard Heins Lawrence and his wife Dianne, daughter Gracelee. Great-niece Carrie Meghan Howland and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends are also much loved by Isabel and Bill.
Our sincere thanks go to the kind and loving caregivers (Karen, Kelly, Tabatha, Sue and Rosa) and UNC Hospice who have all gone out of their way to keep Isabel cared for in so many ways over the past 16 months. There couldn’t have been a better team to “lead them to glory”.
